Mauricio Pochettino revealed there was “no extra pressure” in an “emotional” match against his former side Southampton.

Christian Eriksen’s first half strike was enough to give Spurs all three points for the first time since August 24.

The former Southampton boss spent 18 months on the south coast but said he did not feel any added pressure in today’s game.

He said: “No extra pressure, it was an emotional game for me, I love Southampton and I love the people of Southampton. It was a fantastic 18months for me and my family.

“It was a difficult decision [to join Tottenham]. It was an emotional game.”

Both teams showed attacking intent but found it difficult to find a way through. The away team could have snatched a point but Sadio Mane fluffed his shot wide from six yards out.

Pochettino said: “I am very happy about today’s performance, we still need to improve but I am happy with the three points and the performance.”

After the international break Spurs face four matches in eleven days with the toughest coming away at Manchester City and the Spurs manager says his side need to continue improving.

He said: “We know we need time to improve and to work on different philosophies and after you need to compete.

“After you have capital one and Europa league it is tough. On the training ground you need to put into practice what we want. I make no regrets about my decision.”

Defender Kyle Naughton suffered a nasty looking injury during the first half following an over-the-top challenge from Ryan Bertrand.

The spurs manager said that his team are assessing the injury and could not make a decision on how long the defender will be out for.

The lilywhites are up to sixth place in the league after seven games played.
