Haringey Borough kept up their outside title hopes after a 2-0 win over Enfield 1893 in the Essex Senior League after a 2-0 win on Tuesday night.

Leaders Great Wakering Rovers will be crowned champions if they win their last two games but second-placed Boro kept in touch after extending their unbeaten run to 16 games. Haringey need to win their remaining matches and hope Rovers slip up in at least one of theirs.

Enfield defender Wesley Borghys was the unlikely source for a Boro breakthrough. The player’s failure to deal with Anthony McDonald’s free-kick caused him to bury a close-range finish into his own net.

Enfield’s chances of getting back into the game were hampered by an injury to the league’s leading scorer John Bricknell, keeping the initiative and momentum with Borough.

Haringey’s counter-attacking instincts started to become a factor, as Enfield’s search for an equaliser left plenty of space to be exposed by Daniel Aristidou and McDonald, who were in dangerous form.

With the clock ticking down, Aristidou set off on one of his tricky runs two minutes from time.

After cutting in from the left, he cut the ball back to the waiting Dean Fenton to fire in the second close-range effort of the night.

Borough managed to beat Clapton 2-1 on Saturday thanks to a pair of identical goals from Rakim Richards.

Clapton took the lead a few minutes before the interval through Josh Coulson, however two rare headed goals courtesy of Richards in the 65th and 69th minutes proved to be decisive. Richards powered in an effort towards the far post, connecting from a deep cross McDonald supplied.

It was déjà vu minutes later after Richards met a corner from the same side to nestle a header in at the far post.

Boro travel to Eton Manor tomorrow (Saturday) before hosting Tower Hamlets on Tuesday night.
