Leyton Orient manager Andy Hessenthaler has been sacked after just 16 games in charge at the Matchroom Stadium.

The ex-Gillingham and Dover manager took over after the departure of Kevin Nolan on April 12, but despite a positive start to the season, which saw them fourth early on, the O's have won only one of their last five games.

Assistant manager Andy Edwards will take charge of tomorrow's clash with Plymouth Argyle.

Orient's dreadful second-half performance at Notts County on Saturday, in a 3-1 defeat, looks to have been the final straw for owner Francesco Becchetti.

The club confirmed the 51-year-old's departure in a short three sentence statement on their website.

It read: "The club can confirm that Andy Hessenthaler has been relieved of his role as first team manager.

"We would like to thank Andy for his service to Leyton Orient since arriving in July 2015 and wish him well in his future career.

"Assistant manager Andy Edwards will be assuming Hessenthaler’s duties on an interim basis and will take charge of the team for tomorrow night’s Sky Bet League Two home game with Plymouth Argyle."

The Italian himself has come under fire in recent weeks, and was jeered by fans following the club's 1-0 home defeat to Yeovil the previous weekend.

Hessenthaler worked as assistant for both Nolan and his predecessor Ian Hendon, and becomes the seventh mangerial causaly of Becchetti's reign.

In total, the O's have won seven, drew two and lost seven of Hessenthaler's brief spell in charge.

Assistant manager, Andy Edwards, is expected to take charge of Oreint's League Two clash with table topping Plymouth Argyle tomorrow.
