Women and girls across the borough are invited to share the issues that are affecting them.

Waltham Forest Women’s Network will hold a meeting to find out what concerns and problems women are experiencing and put together a document listing the issues.

The document will be sent to Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, London assembly member for North East London, Jennette Arnold, and councillors in Waltham Forest asking them to address the issues.

Chairman of Waltham Forest Women’s Network, Nadia Baksh, said the group want to hear from women about their every day issues.

The 37-year-old from Chingford said: “We are inviting women and girls who live or work in the borough to take part and we are trying to address the issues they are facing.

“Sexual harassment, being a lone parent, domestic violence and harassment in the workplace are all big issues.

“We really want this to be a grassroots thing and we may find some of the issues that people come forward with are affecting others too.”

The group held their annual general meeting in June where members called for the Mayor of London to support Rooms of our Own, an organisation that campaigns for a women’s centre in Waltham Forest.

Sahdia Warraich from Healthwatch raised the issue of a lack of female GPs in the borough which affects women from conservative communities who may not be allowed to see a male GP.

Calls were made for a roll-back of the Mini-Holland scheme which is causing problems for disabled women whose carers cannot pick them at home due to road closures.

Ms Baksh said although somethings have improved, new issues have cropped up that need addressing.

She said: “Somethings have gotten better but other things have gotten worse.

“Some women who have issues with domestic violence cannot really say anything to their GP if they need their partner to translate for them.

“We need to have those translation services available because the borough has changed in the past four or five years and it is about addressing the inequalities.

“Only when we come together do we see real change happen and it is about becoming a platform for action.”

The meeting will take place at 7pm on September 8 at 1, Russell Road in Leyton.
