English football fans became a sensation in Iceland after turning up to Euro 2016 matches wearing Iceland supermarket carrier bags bought at their Haringey store.

Chris Banks, 56, travelled to France with his three sons - Paul, Tom and Chris junior - and their friend Matt Pool to watch a series of matches and landed tickets for two Iceland fixtures.

They had originally discussed buying shirts for each nation they were watching but realised it was too expensive.

Chris explained his 54-year-old wife Maureen, a dental hygienist, suggested they instead fashion shirts from carrier bags bought at the supermarket.

Chris said: "Maureen said it would be much cheaper to use plastic bags from Iceland.

"She thinks we're daft but very proud of our efforts.

"Tom lives in Haringey in London and went to his local store to buy a load for 5 pence each. We then cut them into shape.

"We went to the Iceland game against Hungary and the response we got from Iceland fans was unbelievable. They absolutely loved it and were buying us beers and chatting to us. They were great fun.

"Then it all really took off and went crazy - we were interviewed by Iceland TV and it went crazy on Twitter.

"Iceland the supermarket got in touch with us via social media and they brought us Iceland shirts to wear at the Hungary match."

Chris, from Witney, Oxon, who works in construction development, has now returned to the UK but Paul, 23, Tom, 24 and Matthew are still in France, having watched the England match against Slovakia.
