HARINGEY MPS are “welcoming” plans for a 24-hour tube being introduced later this year.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has announced a night tube will launch on the Central and Victoria lines on August 19.

The service will run all night on Fridays and Saturdays and the Piccadilly, Jubilee and Northern lines will follow later in the autumn.

The Victoria line will run from Tottenham Hale to Finsbury Park for 24-hours and the Piccadilly line will run from Bounds Green to Turnpike Lane.

The plans were due to start last September but were delayed after union members went on strike over the service, along with issues about their pay and conditions.

David Lammy, MP for Tottenham, said the line is “great news” for people who will use the line after finishing work in the early hours.

He said: “The confirmation that the Night Tube service will be up and running later this summer is very welcome news, showing how quickly Sadiq has got to grips with his new role and also how Boris just couldn’t get the scheme off the ground.

“The Night Tube service is great news for the many thousands of Londoners who work late into the night or start work extremely early in the morning and I look forward to the other planned lines getting the go ahead as soon as possible.”

Catherine West, MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, believes people in the borough will appreciate an all-night service.

She said: “Residents of Hornsey and Wood Green, and indeed people living across the borough of Haringey will benefit tremendously from the night tube, given that we are well-serviced by stations on the Victoria, Piccadilly and Northern lines.

“I am very proud that our new Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has moved so quickly on this issue and announced dates for its launch.”

Cllr Joe Goldberg, cabinet member for economic development, hopes the plans will help Crossrail 2 move forward.

He said: “It’s great that Sadiq Khan is bringing in the Night Tube which will help deliver the modern transport system London needs.

“The next step is Crossrail 2 and I hope the New Mayor of London will give his full support to bringing the new rail link to Haringey, Enfield and Barnet.

“Crossrail 2 would deliver thousands of new homes, jobs and economic growth in North London for generations to come.”

Mr Khan announced yesterday the tube had been a priority for him since becoming mayor, in order to improve the number of delays.

He said: "The Night Tube is absolutely vital to my plans to support and grow London's night time economy - creating more jobs and opportunities for all Londoners.

“The constant delays under the previous Mayor let Londoners down badly.

“I have made getting the Night Tube up and running a priority, and London Underground has now confirmed that services on the first two lines will launch on August 19.”
