Scores of children in Haringey are awaiting adoption according to report

A Voluntary Adoption Agency (AFA) is appealing for applications after a recent report revealed over 40 children are awaiting adoption in Haringey.

According to First 4 Adoption around 500 children are currently waiting for adoption in London with over 40 of these based in Haringey.

Many of the children are school age and have been waiting for adoption for a substantial period.

With recent reports showing a chronic lack of adopters considering children awaiting adoption for longer than 18 months, AFA is looking to clear up the myths surrounding adoption that can dissuade potential applicants.

The AFA asses potential adopters and helps provide support during the process, as well as helping to combat a lack of awareness.

Sally Melbourne, CEO of Core Assets Children’s Services, who set up the AFA comments: “The decision to adopt is one of the most challenging but rewarding decisions a person can make. However, there are a lot of potential adoptive parents out there that rule themselves out before they even start the journey.

The agency hopes to increase the numbers of disabled children being adopted by educating adopters about the needs of the children and encouraging them to be open-minded.

“We’re committed to increasing the number of adopters for children who are waiting, particularly for those who have been waiting longest.” Ms Melbourne continued.

“Our team has extensive experience of working with children with disabilities, their families and carers and can support adopters to understand how they could meet the needs of a child with disabilities or developmental uncertainty.”
