Volunteers worked together to spruce up the streets.

Shopkeepers and householders picked up their brooms and filled sacks with rubbish as part of Community Clear-up Day on Saturday.

At Palace Gates Road, Alexandra Park, traders worked together with Haringey Borough Council waste contractor Veolia to clear litter and waste from the side pathways and rear entrances to create a more pleasant shopping environment.

Community Clear-up Day was a national, government-backed event which saw volunteers around the country join forces to tidy up their local area.

Haringey Council's cabinet member for environment Councillor Stuart McNamara said: “In Haringey we have a huge number of active residents who want their neighbourhood to look their best and they once again did us proud by turning out in large numbers to join these community clear ups.

“This should just not be a one-off and through a new project coming soon, and by continuing and expanding Operation Clean Streets, we want to empower communities to bring about the changes and improvements that they want, as well as involving them in finding solutions to any issues.”
