The amount of waste being sent for recycling has reached its highest ever level.

Kerbside food waste collections have been made since 2006 and the service was recently expanded to give those living in blocks of flats and on estates the chance to divert food waste away from their dustbins.

Eco-conscious recyclers have made the most of the new service, handing over an additional eight tonnes of food waste each week to be recycled into compost.

People living on estates have been given indoor food caddies and communal food waste wheelie bins for waste including vegetable peelings to plate scrapings and tea bags.

Cllr Stuart McNamara, Haringey Borough Council cabinet member for environment said: “It’s great news that residents in estates and blocks of flat have embraced the extra opportunities to recycle.

“Their efforts, alongside those of thousands of keen recyclers across Haringey, mean we are recycling more waste than ever before.”
