Girls will get their hands dirty at an event to inspire them to become engineers.

Students from Tottenham UTC, in Lillywhite House, High Road, are running the ‘Introduce A Girl to Engineering Day’ for girls from primary schools in Haringey.

The college opened its doors for pupils aged 14 to 18-years-old and is part of Tottenham Hotspur’s Football Club stadium redevelopment scheme.

They hope the scheme will generate more interest in engineering amongst young female school children as a way to help address some of the issues facing the industry.

The girls from 60 primary schools will participate in a series of workshops, including CAD, pneumatics and Lego NXT.

Speaking about the event, TUTC Principal, Deborah Ramm-Harpley, said: “It’s said that 2.5million new engineers will be needed to fill the engineering skills gap by 2020, and we have the knowledge and expertise to successfully engage students in engineering, inspiring them to pursue the right training needed for future employment within the industry.

“By working with children at a much younger age, we are able to help them discover the types of career pathways available in engineering and support them in taking the steps needed to achieve their career goals.”
