Shoppers in south Tottenham will not be sad to bid farewell to Tesco Express.

People who use the store in High Road, South Tottenham described it as ‘expensive’ and ‘badly stocked’ in comparison with the larger superstore near Seven Sisters station.

Sharma Dockeray, 36, said: “It was quite convenient at first and I’ve used it a few times but the big one down the road is much better.

“I’d like to see something positive done with the site for the good of the area, something productive that helps young people into work, that would be ideal.”

Stock and pricing were criticised by Maria Beixoto, 43, who said: “This one is expensive and they don’t always have essential things I want like bread and milk, this happens too often and I prefer to use the bigger shop.”

Sue Scott, 32, is hoping for a Waitrose to take the shop’s place, she said: “There’s too many Tescos around these days, they’re everywhere. One needs a Waitrose round here to help make the place a bit more upmarket.”

Tesco announced yesterday that their Tesco Express store in High Road, south Tottenham is to be closed after being identified as one of 43 “unprofitable” outlets. The closure puts 16 jobs at risk.

Staff at the store are now in consultation with Tesco to find alternative roles within the company where possible.

Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis said: “In January I announced that our performance as a business has fallen significantly short of where we would want it to be and that to protect the future of the business in the UK we would close 43 unprofitable stores.

“It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that our South Tottenham High Road Express is one of the 43 we plan to close. The decision to close the store has been exceptionally difficult to take. I recognise it will affect many hard working colleagues, our customers and the local community.

"I would like to thank all our customers who have shopped in our store. We will continue to do our best to serve them through our South Tottenham Superstore, Tottenham West Green and Tottenham Hale Village Expresses, and our dotcom service.”

The store will join 42 others that have been earmarked for closure, with more than 2,000 Tesco staff members affected.
